Cholesterol is a fat-like substance. The body needs it to work properly. High cholesterol means a person has too much cholesterol in the blood. Left untreated, it can increase a person's chance of having heart disease.
The only way to know if you have high blood cholesterol is to have a blood test.
When the body produces and accumulates excessive levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, and the levels of the "good" HDL cholesterol are low, it can indicate an increased risk of heart disease.
