Diabetes is known to be a hereditary condition, meaning that it runs in families.

Type 1 diabetes usually develops in children and young adults, although this disease can occur at any age.

Experts agree that there are certain lifestyle and genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

People who are the greatest risk of developing type 2 diabetes include those who:

Are age 45 or older
 |
 |
Are overweight
 |
 |
Have a family member (such as a parent, brother or sister) with diabetes
 |
 |
Are not physically active
 |
 |
Are African American, Latino, Native American, Asian American or Pacific Islander
 |
 |
Have had high blood sugar levels in the past
 |
 |
Had diabetes during pregnancy (gestational) or have had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds (4.1 kg)
 |
 |
Have a blood pressure that is 140/90 mmHg or higher, or have been told by a healthcare professional that they have high blood pressure
 |
 |
Have low ("good") cholesterol (less than 35 mg/dl)
 |
 |
Have a high level of fats (triglycerides) in the blood (greater than 250 mg/dl)
 |
