Overview Risk Factors Symptoms Treatment Options

When discussing treatment plans, make sure your doctor knows you are a professional driver.

Though incurable, high blood pressure can be treated successfully through lifestyle modifications and, when needed, medication. Treatment depends on the severity of the high blood pressure and presence of other risk factors such as diabetes.

MEDICATION: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Your doctor will advise you on specific medications that may help you reach your blood pressure goal.

Some medications may be better than others for the demands working on the road. Be sure to inform your doctor that you are a driver when discussing medications.

Early treatment can help avoid the serious, long-term effects of high blood pressure. Although your condition may be easy to ignore because you have no symptoms, it is critical that you take your blood pressure medication as prescribed.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES: START SMALL

Most people will need to use a combination of medication and healthier lifestyle habits to control their high blood pressure. For prehypertensive patients or patients with mild hypertension, lifestyle changes may the only treatment needed. These changes include:

Changing the diet and losing weight
Stopping smoking
Moderating alcohol intake
Exercising regularly
Managing stress

BLOOD PRESSURE GOALS:

As a professional driver, you have specific blood pressure requirements for certification or recertification that you should discuss with your doctor.

BOTTOM LINE FOR PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS:
