| Preparing for the CDL Exam: |
| TALKING WITH YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE |
Tell your doctor that you are a professional driver, and that you need to be at a BP level of 140/90 or lower to renew your CDL |
Talk about how your work as a professional driver may be affecting your BP, including your schedule, eating habits and stress levels.
Questions to ask your doctor:
| 1. | How can I learn more about high blood pressure, and how can I measure my own levels, even when on the road?
| 2. | What affect do any medicines I take — including over-the-counter decongestants for colds or allergies — have on my blood pressure?
| 3. | What are my options for high blood pressure medicines? Do I need one...or more? How do I take them?
| 4. | How will my BP medicines affect my driving and daily life?
| 5. | How can I lower my blood pressure through lifestyle changes, including reducing caffeine and salt, limiting alcohol use, quitting smoking, weight loss, stress control, and exercise. Remind your doctor that any recommendations should be compatible with life on the road. |
