| CDL Exam Requirements |
Here are the current requirements, listed by condition, for a driver to maintain his/her CDL medical certificate:

Blood Pressure (BP):

BOTTOM LINE FOR PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS: Your blood pressure needs to be below 140/90 |

If a driver has high blood pressure (hypertension) and/or is being medicated for it, he or she will need to be recertified more frequently, depending on the stage of hypertension.
Stage 1 (BP is 140/90-159/99):
You may be certified for one year.
At recertification:
if your BP is equal to or less than 140/90 you may be certified for one year;
if your BP is greater than 140/90 but less than 160/100, a one-time certificate for 3 months can be issued.
Stage 2 (BP is 160/100-179/109):
You should be treated and a one-time certificate for 3-month certification can be issued.
Once you have reduced your BP to equal to or less than 140/90, you may be recertified annually thereafter.
Stage 3 (BP equal to or greater than 180/110):
You will not be certified until your BP is reduced to 140/90 or less, and then you may be recertified every 6 months. |

Diabetes:

If the driver takes insulin to control a diabetic condition, the driver is not qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle.
If the driver is diagnosed with mild diabetes at the examination and can be stabilized with oral medication and diet that can be obtained while the driver is on duty, it is not considered disqualifying. However, the driver must remain under adequate medical supervision.

High Cholesterol:
At this time there are no DOT guidelines regarding high cholesterol.
