Remember: This is an easy and painless test. A blood pressure cuff is placed around the arm and inflated. Then the air is slowly let out.
Tips for Your Blood Pressure Test
Relax. Blood pressure is usually lower when you are relaxed and higher during activity or when you are stressed. Be sure you have a chance to sit still and relax for at least 5 minutes before your BP is measured.
Caffeine increases your blood pressure temporarily, so don’t drink coffee, soda, tea or any drink with caffeine at least 30 minutes before your reading.
Headache or over-the-counter medications containing caffeine should be avoided before measuring blood pressure.
Avoid cold medicines with decongestants because they can tighten blood vessels throughout your body and increase your blood pressure. This will affect your reading. Ask your pharmacist or healthcare professional about cold products that are made specifically for people with high blood pressure.
Smoking can increase your blood pressure temporarily. If you must smoke, avoid smoking for at least 30 minutes before your reading.
Wear a comfortable short-sleeve T-shirt. If you roll up a long-sleeve shirt, make sure it’s not tight around your arm, which constricts your blood vessels.
Go to the bathroom first. A full bladder can slightly alter your reading.
Finally, remember that if your blood pressure is higher than it should be, it can be controlled.
